Finding a motor!
Friday, Mar 21, 2008
This week, seen as we were on our Easter holidays we (Eric and Oliver) thought we'd step up our search for a banger. Little did we know how frustrating and tiring the process could be!
On the Tuesday we had an important meeting with one of our sponsors - Chilled Turtle represented by the record breaking Dave Cornthwaite. Following this productive meeting we scanned classifieds for potential cars we could buy.
The following day we found a Citroen AX which seemed to be in pretty good condition and was based in Northampton. Usually, this journey would take about an hour and a half. However, due to the traffic on the South Circular it took us 4 hours! And to add insult to injury when we arrived, the owner had already sold the vehicle which annoyed us so much. Then, in order to dodge some of the rush hour traffic we took a long route back to South London which took another few hours. In total our persevering driver – Oliver, covered roughly 200 miles and because we gained little from the journey other than some practice for the rally, we were left gutted and tired.
On the journey back we discussed other potential cars and we found two Fiat Unos, one based in Chelmsford and one in Brighton. We decided we’d assess them the following day.
The next day, because of our experience the previous day, we decided to set off early. Bu this time we checked that the cars were still available – and luckily we did because they were both sold. The only good thing to come out of that day was some extra kip!
We continue our journey to find a car and hopefully in the next blog we will have some better news. We hope to have a car by the end of the month as another sponsor Car Tribe is organising a rolling road to test our cars performance which should be pretty interesting.
Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is……preparation is key!
The Route
Wednesday, Mar 19, 2008
Our team has decided to take the North route, which i think only one other team will be taking - Team Arrr Taste who are also friends of our team. This route will see us cover cities such as Brussels, Amsterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Moscow and Ulaanbaatar.
I think the two tough areas of the journey will be driving through Scandinavia and also driving as we get closer to Mongolia due to the tough terain. The tough terrain will clearly take its toll on our chosen car. And driving Scandinavia will be tough basically because of the lower tenperatures relative to other countries and also because we'll be driving either North or South most of the time as oppsoed to East like the rest of the rallyers.
By the time i write the next blog Team Arrr Mate should have a car so we will accompany this news with some pictures and hopefully some video.
Go on, show some love! Be the first to say something.
