Mongol Rally 2008 Challenge

Eric

Wednesday, Mar 26, 2008

Earlier today we continued to overcome the challenge of buying a car with less than a 1000cc engine, which is fairly cheap and in decent condition. We lined up a Nissan Micra in West London the day before but by the time the team met up...it was sold! Once again we had been beaten by another buyer (see previous blog).

So, we set out to trawl the classifieds for something that was worthy of the 10,000 mile journey. We had no luck for a few hours, but our luck changed all of a sudden just after lunch when we were made aware of a Nissan Micra due Oliver's mother whom we thank for her efforts. The car sounded perfect, it was a 1994 model and had done only 55,000 miles. We arranged a viewing and despite the destination being only 7 miles away, it took us nearly half an hour! Mainly because we got a bit lost (no thanks to Google Maps there) and that doesn't bode too well for the 10,000 mile road trip. Anyway, once we arrived and saw the car we knew it would be the one we would take to Mongolia, it was in near perfect condition thanks to the 2 previous owners. It has a decent sound system too and everything is in perfect working order so we decided after a test drive that we would purchase the red Micra.

We began our journey back upbeat and eagerly awaiting the July 19th launch date in Hyde Park now that we had something to do the rally in! However, despite me (Eric) roughly knowing the relatively short journey back, our driver (Oliver) decided that it would be a good idea to go on the M25. Now, this would be a good idea usually, however, it meant driving in the opposite direction that we needed to go and using the M25 anti-clockwise just after rush hour. It then meant that our journey increased from 7 miles to 25 miles and it was a farcical decision made by a driver whom you can usually trust with the vast knowledge he has of the British roads. And the reason for this detour, according to Oliver was that it was a “joke” - truly baffling! I just hope he won't be making such a “joke” on the way to Mongolia!

Despite all that, we will be picking up the Micra in the coming week and should have pictures too.
