Thank you for your donation and support of Hope and Homes for Children (HHC) through the Mongol Rally. By kindly supporting the work of HHC you are transforming the lives of children across Central and Eastern Europe and Africa, enabling them to grow up within the love of a family so that they can fulfil their potential. Below is a glimpse of how your support is making a difference: Central and Eastern Europe Today, home for over one million children across Central and Eastern Europe is a bleak, state-run institution where facilities rarely meet their most basic needs. Living in an institution can have a severe effect on a child’s life, often causing physical and mental harm. In 2007, we completed our first institution closure in Belarus. The Pravye Most institution was home to 99 children from the Grodno region. We are pleased to report that each one of these children is now growing up within the care of a family. Building on our success of this project, we have started our second institution closure in the country. We are developing individual care plans for the 77 children who currently live in the Voronovo institution. It is hoped that, with support, most of these children will be able to return to their birth or extended families. Africa Across Africa, HIV/AIDS and war have decimated entire communities, leaving many children alone and facing a bleak future. In Sierra Leone, 50 young women have graduated from our Young Mothers Support programme, having learnt the skills needed to help them live independently. When they first joined our programme, many of these young women were living in poverty, isolated from their families and communities due to the stigma of being a single mother. As part of the programme the young mothers received education and life skills training alongside learning a trade in areas such as catering, tailoring and soap making. Additionally, we have helped many of them to reconcile with their families and to become active and respected members of their communities again. Imagine growing up not knowing what a family is, not having the sense of belonging or emotional support that being part of one provides. For over a million children living in institutions in Central and Eastern Europe, this is all too much a reality while in Africa, HIV/AIDS is orphaning millions of children, robbing them of their childhood.
Hope and Homes for Children (HHC) gives hope to the poorest children in the world – those who are orphaned, abandoned or vulnerable – by enabling them to grow up within the love of a family and the security of a home, so that they can fulfil their potential. HHC works in twelve countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Africa. In CEE their work is focussed on closing institutions and moving children into family-based care and in Africa they provide a vital lifeline for families at risk of breakdown due to the pressures of poverty, disease and conflict.
