About the Adventure 'In traveling I shape myself betimes to idleness And take fools' pleasure' - George Elliot The Spanish Gypsy

Welcome to the adventure

On the 18th of July 2008 200 teams of ramshackle cars and bikes will convene in Hyde Park ready to journey across both Europe and Asia to meet, should luck and providence dictate it, at the finish line of the Mongol Rally in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Now in its third year this rally was founded not only for the sake of modern day adventure but to raise money and awareness for worthwhile charities such as Mercy Corps Mongolia.

This year the 'Optimistic Fools' have picked up the gauntlet and plan to drag it, kicking and screaming, over mountain and dale, through rivers, deserts and far away mystical cities, under, over or round what ever adversity deigns to toss in their general direction, in a modern day adventure reminiscent of Gulliver’s wanderings, Don Quizote's adventures and Marco Polo's mischiefs, only with a bit more of a those magical men and their just-about-road-worthy-Renault 4 feel about it. As much as these modern day action heroes laugh casually in the face of danger and relish any chance for adventure any interest or support you can offer would be absurdely well received.

Michael Palin is fond of saying "smile at the world and the world smiles back at you". The fools adhere closely to this philosophy and have no doubt that blind optimism and general jolliness will shepherd them through every eventuality... To find out if they're right, keep watching this space! Tally-ho!

The world is just a little bit too safe. Gone are the days when the edge of the map called you forth to discover what lay beyond - satellite maps and GPS have it laid out before you leave the armchair. What if you want th...
