Cameroon is often described as “Africa in miniature”, thanks to its huge variety of landscapes and climate. In Cameroon Send a Cow works in the dry Far North Province, the Equatorial and Humid Rainforests of the centre and coastal provinces. In Cameroon we have adapted the basic Send a Cow programme to suit these varying conditions. Livestock placed in Cameroon include sheep, goats and pigs. In the humid forest region of Cameroon Send a Cow is donating a new and unlikely animal: Grasscutters! Also known as Cane Rats these are plump rodents that mainly eat grass.

Current Situation
As in so many countries around the world, deforestation is damaging the fragile environment. Poor families often have no choice but to hunt bush animals (e.g. gorillas) for food – but in doing so have a detrimental effect to the populations of a number of species, and can lead to the destruction of the rainforest itself.

Proposed Solution
By providing ‘domesticated’ grasscutters and hutch materials, families can quickly build up a breeding business to earn themselves income as well as adding an important source of protein to their diet. By providing an alternative way of sustaining livelihoods, people are deterred from hunting bush meat, preventing the impact this has on the rainforest and the species within it.

Plan for Money Received
Donations from the African Adventurist Rally will be spent helping poor farmers in all the regions we work in Cameroon, through the gifts of livestock, training and ongoing support.
