Mercy Corps strives to improve the lives of rural agricultural communities. We work to democratically identify and address common problems through a community mobilisation process to improve quality of life through economic development, health, and youth initiatives. The community mobilisation process is fostered by a combination of economic, social and infrastructure initiatives led by Community Action Groups. Mercy Corps’ project officers work in over 70 communities on a daily basis in Darjeeling, West Bengal and Dibrugarh and Tinsukia Districts, Assam.

Current Situation
The target communities in which Mercy Corps works are isolated with high rates of unemployment, illiteracy, alcoholism, poor health conditions (including severe problems related to water and sanitation and nutrition), and gender inequality. These communities have some of the lowest development indicators levels in India.

Proposed Solution
Mercy Corps community mobilisation process helps communities to identify their most critical problems and define their own solutions. We have a long term commitment to the communities in which we work and take a comprehensive approach to community development. This long term commitment is reflected in the sustainable and quality of our work, which is reflected in results of our monitoring and evaluation.

Plan for Money Received
Each project that we undertake will be for approximately £10,000. 100% of the funding will go directly to projects in our communities as we already will have full time staff working in targeted communities.

Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteers are encouraged in our target communities in Darjeeling. Teachers, engineers, business people, doctors, and nurses. Also, anyone interested in youth development. In short, positive and energetic people who want to make an impact and stay in mountain communities. If you decide to volunteer, you may decide to never leave!

Challenge Fundraising Opportunities
Mercy Corps encourages fundraising all year round – through other organised fundraising events, participation in marathons and walks – or through individuals and groups organising their own activities. Visit our website – www.mercycorps.org.uk - to find out what’s going on in your area – or get in touch if you want to organise something else – we’ll be delighted to support you in whatever way we can.
