Stray FM has decided to let their Mid Morning Presenter Pete Edwards and his team take part in this years Mongol Rally on one condition, that the team raise £5000 for local charities and worthy causes...
Current Situation
There are many worthy causes that we are hoping to help from organisations that are doing something for the local community to people who are in difficult situations and need support, to charities that do great work but just get overlooked when it comes to bigger picture. We are looking to help as many people as possible and this is an opportunity to put something back into the community.
Proposed Solution
By raising the £5000 we are hoping to help more than one charity and worthy cause in the local area. With help from the Harrogate Lions so that all the correct channels are used we are hoping to share the funds raised.
Plan for Money Received
Once we have completed the rally we will be approaching the organisations, charities and individuals with as much support as we can give. Whether that be with a donation or flagging up the great work the organisations and charities do in the local community, we really are hoping to help as many people as possible.
Case Study
Aniela Newton
Aniela is 16 months old and has severe Cerebral Palsy. Shes now at the age where interaction with other children would be a great benefit to her. The First Steps Nursery in Thirsk have offered to take her, but they need additional chairs and standing frames to offer the inclusion for Aniela and children in the same position. Her father Andrew has asked if Stray FM could help with raising the 4000 for the additional equipment so that more parents and children in the same situation will benefit.
The Follifoot Park Disabled Riders Group (FPDRG)
The FPDRG is a local charity based at Follifoot stables just outside Harrogate and provide horse riding for disabled people. With the motion of the horses proven to be excellent therapy it also gives wheel chair bound people a fantastic opportunity to enjoy the freedom of riding whilst exercising their bodies. It was Helen from the charity that contacted Stray FM to see if we could help with the development of the centre as well as aiding with the day to day costs of horse hire. She also hopes we could give them a bit of a plug for volunteers to join the team and all they ask of you is a sense of humour and a pair of wellies!
Horticap
The charity provide horticultural training, supported employment and education for people with learning disability. The students work hard in around the nursery caring for the plants whilst learning new skills and crafts. They also provide contract work, carrying out garden work and maintenance in and around Harrogate. However the 2 vans the charity use are both well used and Faith Douglas, a instructor with Horticap, wrote to Stray FM to see if we could help with fund raising to enable to them buy a new van for the students to go out on jobs in.
Henshaws College
It was Lisa Burn, the recreational leisure instructor at the college in Starbeck for the visually impaired that got in contact with Stray FM looking for some help. The students have access to a multi-gym where they have time to exercise and socialise and a very important part of it is the schwinn bike. This static bike with moving handles is perfect for students with a disability to the upper body giving the opportunity to work that part of the body. Unfortunately a couple of months ago the bike became out of action and the college have been struggling to raise the money to replace it.
The Meningitis Research Foundation
Suggested by Tracy Atkinson in Harrogate as the Trust were there to support Tracy and her daughter Michaela when she contracted the disease earlier this year. Since Michaelas recovery, Tracy has been raising as much money as possible for the trust and has asked if Stray FM could help her out with the fund raising.
