The Ger Village is a safe and loving sanctuary for homeless and abandoned children. It has been developed to address the specific needs of the many children who find themselves in these difficult circumstances.
Current Situation
Following the Soviet withdrawal from Mongolia in 1990 after 80 years of occupation the country suffered economic and social disintegration.
With the collapse of the social welfare system, many of the poorest families were plunged into poverty and thousands of children found themselves homeless and on the streets. Some found shelter in the black market areas while others occupied the cities manholes and some even sought the sanctuary in prison, seeing it as a better option with which to escape the winter temperature of -40C.
As with every child, these children need and deserve a safe and loving environment in which to develop and grow.
Proposed Solution
On her first visit to Mongolia in 1997 Christina recognised the need for urgent assistance for these children. She further understood the need to create a safe home environment, setting about the construction of a village of Gers for homeless and abandoned children where they could live safely in as close as possible to the traditional form of Mongolian life.( Gers are a traditional Mongolian home made from felt over a wooden frame.)
Situated approx 12 kms from Ulaanbaatar the Blue Skies Ger Village is now home to 42 children who live in residential gers each kept by a Ger mother, usually a homeless single parent themselves. There will be five or six children in each residential ger and the ger mother is free to bring her own children to live with them so each ger has a loving family environment.
Plan for Money Received
Naturally an undertaking of this type is costly and the creation of the village was only possible with the assistance of kind donors. The more important and ongoing need for funds is the continuing care of the children in the village and the planned expansion to cater for the many more children in the manholes and the street markets. These are in urgent need and this is where the money will be spent. We have eight residential gers at the moment. The current total cost of maintaining these gers is 48,000 Pounds per annum. For every additional ger, which houses around six children and a ger mother we need 6,000Pounds per annum (our current running costs) plus the purchase cost of the ger which is 750 Pounds.
Timeline is the current budget spread over 12 months of the year. This operation is continuous and ongoing. Unfortunately as everyone understands, costs rise every year.
